Delaware Considering Legalizing Sports Betting
The state of Delaware is considering legalizing sports betting as a way to increase revenue. I hope that the bill goes through despite the misguided opposition of the local media. Fortunately the citizens seem to be speaking up and displaying some common sense as is visible in this letter to the editor:
We must give sports betting a chance.
In Maryland, the teachers union most recently endorsed slots. The teachers realize that without the slot revenue, their educational system will be compromised. Keep in mind that in November, Maryland will vote on legalizing slots.
The economic downside to Delaware will be the additional loss of $80 million to $100 million in slot revenue to Maryland and Pennsylvania. Our education system along with many other state programs will suffer even deeper cuts in 2009.
Is sports betting a cure-all? The answer is no, but it will carry us a long way with new money. Those who still don’t support sports betting simply don’t go. We who do support sports betting parlors will help keep taxes down.
